Ya Imam al-Rusli (يا إمام الرسل) means O Leader of the Messengers and is a famous praise poem dedicated to the Prophet ﷺ. It was composed by Shaykh Abdur Rahim al-Bura’i (الشيخ عبد الرحيم البرعي), a poet from Sudan.

يَا إِمَامَ الرُّسْلِ يَا سَنَدِي ❁ أَنْتَ بَابُ اللهِ مُعْتَمَدِي ❁
فَبِدُنْيَايَ وَآخِرَتِي ❁ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ خُذْ بِيَدِي ❁
فَبِدُنْيَايَ وَآخِرَتِي ❁ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ خُذْ بِيَدِي ❁
Yā imāma r-rusli yā sanadī, anta bābu Llāhi muʿtamadī.
Fabi-dunyāya wa ākhiratī, yā rasūla Llāhi khudh bi-yadī.

O Leader of all Messengers, O you, my Support, you are the door to Allah, the one on whom I rely.
In this my life and in my hereafter, O Messenger of Allah, take me by my hand.

قَسَمًا بِالنَّجْمِ حِينَ هَوٰى ❁ مَا الْمُعَافَى وَالسَّقِيمُ سَوَا ❁
Qasaman bi n-najmi ḥīna hawā, ma l-muʿāfā wa s-saqīmu sawā.
1. An oath was sworn "By the star when it declines", the healthy and sick are not alike.
فَاخْلَعِ الْكَوْنَيْنِ عَنْكَ سِوٰى ❁ حُبِّ مَوْلَى الْعُرْبِ وَالْعَجَمِ ❁
Fa-khlaʿi l-kawnayni ʿanka siwā, ḥubbi mawla l-ʿurbi wa l-ʿajami.
2. So renounce both worlds completely, except for Love for the Master of the Arabs and non-Arabs.
سَيِّدُ السَّادَاتِ مِنْ مُضَرِ ❁ غَوْثُ أَهْلِ الْبَدْوِ وَالْحَضَرِ ❁
Sayyidu s-sādāti min muḍari, ghawthu ahli l-badwi wa l-ḥaḍari.
3. The Master of Masters, from the people of Mudar, the saviour of rural and city dwellers.
صَاحِبُ الْآيَاتِ وَالسُّوَرِ ❁ مَنْبَعُ الْأَحْكَامِ وَالْحِكَمِ ❁
Ṣāhibu l-āyāti wa s-suwari, manbaʿu l-aḥkāmi wa l-ḥikami.
4. The Emissary of verses and chapters (of the Qur’an), he is the source Sacred Law and wisdom.
قَمَرٌ طَابَتْ سَرِيرَتُهُ ❁ وَسَجَايَاهُ وَسِيرَتُهُ ❁
Qamarun ṭābat sarīratuhu, wa sajāyāhu wa sīratuhu.
5. Like a full moon with pleasant disposition, as was his character and way of life.
صَفْوَةُ الْبَارِي وَخِيرَتُهُ ❁ عَدْلُ أَهْلِ الْحِلِّ وَالْحَرَمِ ❁
Ṣafwatu l-Bārī wa khīratuhu, ʿadlu ahli l-ḥilli wa l-ḥarami.
6. The purest and select of all people, a righteous witness for people of right and wrong.
مَا رَأَتْ عَيْنٌ وَلَيْسَ تَرَى ❁ مِثْلَ طٰهٰ فِي الْوَرَى بَشَرَا ❁
Mā ra'at ʿainun wa laysa tarā, mithla Ṭāhā fi l-warā basharā.
7. No eye has seen, or ever will see, a human being the like of Taha.
خَيْرُ مَنْ فَوْقَ الثَّرَى أَثَرَا ❁ طَاهِرُ الْأَخْلَاقِ وَالشِّيَمِ ❁
Khayru man fawqa th-tharā atharā, Ṭāhiru l-akhlāqi wa sh-shiyami.
8. He is the best of those who left traces upon the earth, pure in character and integrity.
