About
As the Prophet ﷺ approached Yathrib (soon to be called Madinah an-Nabi ﷺ, “the City of the Prophet ﷺ”), the Ansar (the Helpers of Madinah) – men, women, and children – gathered outside the city in joy and anticipation. As they saw the Prophet ﷺ appear through the mountain passes of al-Wada, they greeted him with this poem.
According to classical sources, only the first four lines are considered historically likely to have been sung by the people of Madinah when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived. The remaining verses, often found in modern renditions, were composed over the centuries. In this version, lines 19 to 25 were written by the Yemeni scholar and saint Habib Ali al-Habashi (d. 1915 CE). The rest of the verses (lines 5-18) are poetic additions by other authors.
