Surah Muhammad
Contents

Those who reject the way of God and also block others from it, God lets their works be lost: [47:1]
while those who believe and do good works, believing in what was sent down to Muhammad —as it is the truth from their Lord—God will remove their evils from them and will make them whole. [47:2]
That is because those who scoff follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does God give people their models. [47:3]
So when you suffer confrontation with those who scoff, let the blow be at the neck: then when you have thrashed them soundly, then make the shackle strong; then [free them] afterward, whether for largess or for ransom, so that war may put down its burdens. So it is. If God wishes, God will surely take revenge on them, and yet intentionally tests some of you by others. And those who are killed in the cause of God, God will not let their acts have been in vain. [47:4]
God will guide them and make their hearts whole, [47:5]
and admit them to the garden God has announced for them. [47:6]
Believers, if you help God, God will help you, making your steps steady. [47:7]
As for those who scoff, there is misery for them, and God will let their works be lost. [47:8]
That is because they hate what God has revealed, so God makes their works fruitless. [47:9]
Haven’t they traveled the earth and seen how those before them ended up? God destroyed them; and the same will happen to the atheists. [47:10]
That is because God is the protector of those who believe, while the atheists have no protector. [47:11]
Those who believe and do good deeds God will admit into gardens below which rivers flow. And as for those who scoff, they enjoy themselves a while, eating like cattle, but their abode will be the fire. [47:12]
And how many cities have been more powerful than yours that expelled you: We destroyed them, and there was no one to help them. [47:13]
Is one who follows evidence from his Lord like one to whom the evil of his acts seems good, as they follow their desires? [47:14]
The model of the garden promised to the conscientious: in it are streams of water never brackish; and streams of milk whose taste never changes; and streams of wine that is bliss to those who drink it; and streams of pure honey. And there is every kind of fruit for them there, and forgiveness from their Lord. Is that like the state of those who remain in the fire, are given boiling water to drink, and it lacerates their guts? [47:15]
Among them are those who listen to you, but when they leave your presence they say to those given knowledge, “What did he just say?” They are the ones whose hearts God has sealed, who follow their caprices. [47:16]
As for those receptive to guidance, God increases guidance for them, giving them their conscience. [47:17]
So are they waiting for anything but the end of time, lest it come upon them suddenly? But signs of it have already come; so how can their reminder benefit them when it has come upon them? [47:18]
So recognize that there is no deity but God, and seek forgiveness for your fault, and for the believing men and believing women: for God knows your comings and goings and your dwellings. [47:19]
Those who believe say, “Why hasn’t a chapter been revealed?” Then when a decisive chapter is revealed with fighting mentioned in it, you see those in whose hearts is sickness look to you with the look of one in a swoon in the face of death. But worthier for them [47:20]
is obedience and a courteous word. And when the matter is resolved, if they were true to God it will surely be good for them. [47:21]
Might it be that if you were put in authority you would do violence in the land, and cut off your blood relations? [47:22]
They are those whom God has cursed, making them deaf and blind. [47:23]
Don’t they meditate on the Recital, or are their hearts locked up? [47:24]
As for those who turn their backs after guidance has been made clear to them, Satan has made suggestions to them and has encouraged them. [47:25]
That is because they said to those averse to what God revealed, “We will obey you in part of the matter.” But God knows their secrets. [47:26]
And how about when the angels take their souls, striking their faces and their backs? [47:27]
That is because they followed what incensed God, and despised what is pleasing to God, and that made their works fruitless. [47:28]
Do those in whose hearts is sickness think God will not bring out their hatreds? [47:29]
If We wished, We would have shown them to you, so you would recognize them by their mark. Yet you will certainly recognize them in tone of speech. And God knows what you do. [47:30]
We will certainly test you until We know those of you who strive and those who are constant; We will certainly bring out the facts about you. [47:31]
As for those who scoff and obstruct others from the way of God, and contend with the messenger after guidance has been made clear to them, they will never harm God at all, and God will defeat their actions. [47:32]
Believers, obey God, and obey the messenger; and don’t let your actions be in vain. [47:33]
As for those who scoff and hinder others from the way of God and then die as atheists, God will not forgive them. [47:34]
So don’t flag and call for truce when you are in the ascendant and God is with you and will never cheat you for your deeds. [47:35]
The life of the world is but a game, a diversion: but if you have faith and are conscientious, God will give you your reward and won’t ask you for your belongings. [47:36]
If God asked you for them, importuning you, you would try to withhold, and it would bring out your grudges. [47:37]
Behold, you are those invited to spend in the cause of God, but some of you are stingy. Yet if anyone is stingy, he’s only being stingy to his own soul; for God is self-sufficient, while you are the needy ones. And if you turn away, God will replace you with another people who would not be like you. [47:38]
