Translation
A questioner asked about an agony that is inevitable [70:1]
for the atheists which none can repel, [70:2]
from God, Lord of the steps of ascent, [70:3]
to whom the angels and the spirit ascend in a day that is fifty thousand years long. [70:4]
So be patient, with graceful patience. [70:5]
For they see it distant [70:6]
while We see it near: [70:7]
the day when the sky will be like molten brass, [70:8]
and the mountains will be like particolored wool, [70:9]
and a friend won’t ask after a friend, [70:10]
even though they see them. The sinner will wish he could bail himself out of the agony of that day by sacrificing his children, [70:11]
and his wife, and his brother, [70:12]
and his family sheltering him, [70:13]
and everyone on earth, in order to save him. [70:14]
By no means! For that is raging fire [70:15]
pulling insistently by the scalp, [70:16]
calling those who turn their backs and avert their faces, [70:17]
and accumulate a hoard. [70:18]
For man was created anxious, [70:19]
unhappy when ill afflicts him, [70:20]
and stingy when good befalls him; [70:21]
except the prayerful [70:22]
who are constant in their prayer, [70:23]
and those in whose wealth is an acknowledged right [70:24]
for the beggar and the outcast, [70:25]
and those who recognize the reality of the judgment day, [70:26]
and those who fear punishment from their Lord— [70:27]
for the punishment of their Lord is uncertain— [70:28]
and those who keep their chastity— [70:29]
except with their wives and legitimate consorts, for they are not to be blamed, [70:30]
while those who go beyond that are the transgressors— [70:31]
and those who respect their pledges and promises [70:32]
and those who stand by their testimonies [70:33]
and those who are mindful of their prayer: [70:34]
they will be honored in gardens. [70:35]
So what is the matter with those who scoff, rushing before you, transfixed, [70:36]
from the right and from the left, in crowds? [70:37]
Does every one of them want to be admitted to the garden of happiness? [70:38]
By no means— for We have made them from what they know. [70:39]
Oh, no! I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests that We are surely able [70:40]
to replace them with better than they: and We are not to be outdone. [70:41]
So leave them to their preoccupation and their trifling, until they meet their day, of which they are warned; [70:42]
the day they will emerge from the graves in a rush, as if they were hastening to a place of sacrifice, [70:43]
their eyes lowered, ignominy overcoming them— that is the day of which they’ve been warned. [70:44]
