    Surah Haqqah

    Contents
      The momentous event— [69:1]
what is the momentous event, [69:2]
and what will make you understand what the momentous event will be? [69:3]
The Thamud and the ‘Ad denied the catastrophe: [69:4]
As for the Thamud, they were destroyed by a storm; [69:5]
and the ‘Ad, they were destroyed by a violent, furious gale, [69:6]
which God sent against them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you could see the people prostrate in it, like stumps of fallen palms. [69:7]
Now do you see any of them surviving? [69:8]
Pharaoh and his predecessors too, and the overthrown cities also committed habitual sin, [69:9]
and disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, Who then inflicted an increasing penalty on them. [69:10]
When the water flooded, We ferried you in the ark, [69:11]
to make it a reminder for you, that the ears may keep it in memory. [69:12]
Then when the trumpet is sounded once, [69:13]
and the earth is picked up, mountains and all, and they are demolished, crushed all at once, [69:14]
on that day the inevitable will come to pass: [69:15]
the sky will be split apart, for it will be fragile that day; [69:16]
and the angels will be by its sides, while eight will bear the throne of your Lord above them that day. [69:17]
On that day you will be exposed; no secret of yours will be hidden. [69:18]
Then he whose record is placed in his right hand will say, “Here, read my record— [69:19]
“I considered myself destined to face my reckoning.” [69:20]
And he will be in an agreeable life, [69:21]
      in lofty gardens [69:22]
where fruits are near at hand: [69:23]
“Eat and drink with pleasure, for you have earned it in days gone by.” [69:24]
As for he whose record is placed in his left hand, he will say, “Oh, if only I hadn’t been handed my record, [69:25]
“and never knew what my account was. [69:26]
“Oh, if only that had been the end! [69:27]
“My property has been of no avail to me, [69:28]
“my power has passed away from me.” [69:29]
“Seize him and bind him, [69:30]
“and let him burn in the blaze. [69:31]
“Then make him walk in a chain seventy cubits long, [69:32]
“for he did not believe in almighty God [69:33]
“and did not encourage feeding the poor. [69:34]
“So he has no friend here today, [69:35]
“and no food but pus, [69:36]
“which no one eats but those in error.” [69:37]
Indeed, I swear by what you see [69:38]
and what you do not see [69:39]
that this is the word of a noble messenger, [69:40]
not the word of a poet. Little do you believe. [69:41]
It is not the word of a diviner either. Little do you heed. [69:42]
It is a revelation sent down from the Lord of the universe. [69:43]
If he falsely attributed some sayings to Us, [69:44]
We would seize him by the right hand [69:45]
      and sever his aorta, [69:46]
and not one of you could prevent it. [69:47]
For this is really a message for the conscientious, [69:48]
while We certainly know there are those of you who scoff, [69:49]
and it is distressful to atheists, [69:50]
yet it is certain truth, [69:51]
so glorify the name of your mighty Lord. [69:52]
