Salat al-Tibbiyya
Salat al-Tibbiyya (Arabic: صلاة الطبية; “The Prayer of Medicine”), also known as Salat al-Tibb al-Qulub (Arabic: صلاة طب القلوب; “The Prayer of the Medicine of Hearts”), is a well-known prayer upon the Prophet ﷺ recited for spiritual and physical healing. It was composed by the eminent Egyptian scholar Shaykh Ahmad al-Dardir (d. 1204 AH/1786 CE). In the Indian subcontinent it is commonly known as Durood-e-Shifa (Urdu: درودِ شفا), while in Southeast Asia it is widely recited as Sholawat Tibbil Qulub. Muslims have long recited this prayer seeking healing from spiritual and physical ailments, by the permission of Allah the Exalted.

About Salat al-Tibbiyya
This prayer is traditionally recited 2,000 times for any illness, although some scholars also mention reciting it 400 times. By the permission of Allah, it is hoped that healing will be granted.
Salat al-Tibbiyya is also traditionally recited for eye ailments and disorders. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as Salat Nur al-Absar (Arabic: صلاة نور الأبصار; “The Prayer of the Light of Vision”). Habib Ahmad bin Hasan al-Attas (d. 1334 AH/1916 CE), a saintly scholar from Haridah, Yemen, relates the following in one of his works:
A man suffering from impaired eyesight came to my master, may Allah be pleased with him. He passed his hand over the man’s eyes and instructed him to recite Salat Nur al-Absar [Salat al-Tibbiyya] in abundance. Habib Muhammad bin Zayn Ba Aboud later informed me that the man related: “I went to Habib Saleh bin Abdullah al-Attas regarding my eye condition. He wiped over my eyes and instructed me, ‘Recite the following prayer upon the Prophet ﷺ 300 times each day: Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadin ṭibbi l-qulūbi wa-dawā’iha, wa-ʿāfiyati l-abdāni wa-shifā’iha, wa-qūti l-arwāḥi wa-ghadhā’iha, wa-nūri l-abṣāri wa-ḍiyā’iha, wa-ʿalā ālihi wa-ṣaḥbihi wa-sallim.’ He later said, ‘My eyesight was restored to what it had been before.’”
Shaykh Moulay Ahmad bin al-Ma’mun al-Balghithi (d. 1348 AH/1929 CE), may Allah have mercy on him, a saintly Maliki scholar from Fes, Morocco, said:
Our Shaykh, Sidi Abu al-Abbas Ahmad bin al-Arabi bin Umar al-Meknasi, granted me permission to recite this prayer. He told me, “Recite it 315 times to ward off heart disease.” I asked him, “Do you mean diseases of the physical heart or ailments of the spiritual heart?” He replied, “It benefits both.” Our Shaykh, Abu Abdullah Junoun, may Allah have mercy on him, also mentioned in his Ta’liqah ‘ala al-Muwatta that the recitation of this prayer protects against the plague.
His Eminence Dr Shaykh Wahbah al-Zuhaili (d. 1436 AH/2015 CE), may Allah have mercy on him, was asked, “Does sending prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ help bring about healing, by the will of Allah?” He replied:
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadin ṭibbi l-qulūbi wa-dawā’iha, wa-ʿāfiyati l-abdāni wa-shifā’iha, wa-nūri l-abṣāri wa-ḍiyā’iha, wa-ʿalā ālihi wa-ṣaḥbihi wa-sallim. Shaykh Hashim al-Khatib taught us to place the hand upon the right temple and recite this prayer 10 times with humility and presence of heart. By the will of Allah Almighty, healing will come. This has been tried and proven through experience. I personally practise this and have no need for medicine.
Some scholars have mentioned:
It is recommended to recite this prayer 100 times each morning after the Fajr prayer, 100 times each evening after the Asr prayer, and a further 100 times before Maghrib. It is said to have remarkable benefits for heart disease and many other illnesses. Whoever recites it 7 times over water before drinking it will witness amazing effects. It has been tried and tested as a means of seeking healing from all illnesses, by the will of Allah Almighty.
The following is another remarkable account concerning the blessings of this prayer. Shaykh Sulayman Abdu Rabbihi al-Qalyubi, may Allah have mercy upon him, related the following about an incident that took place in 1966:
By the will of Allah, I was afflicted with a severe neurological illness. I went to the doctors, who told me, “You have only a one percent chance of survival.” I then left, performed wudhu, and withdrew to my place of seclusion. There I devoted myself to invoking prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ, repeatedly saying: “Allāhumma ṣalli wa-sallim wa-bārik ʿalā sayyidinā Muḥammadin ṭibbi l-qulūbi wa-dawā’iha, wa-ʿāfiyati l-abdāni wa-shifā’iha, wa-nūri l-abṣāri wa-ḍiyā’iha.” Before the time of Fajr, I felt the coolness of the Prophet’s ﷺ blessed hand upon my head, and he ﷺ said to me, “My son, recite: wa-rūḥi l-arwāḥi wa-sirri baqā’ihā.” Afterwards, I returned to the doctors, and they were astonished by my recovery. Among them was a non-Muslim doctor. When I told him what had happened, he said, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah.”
