O Allah, send prayers upon the one through whom the hidden mysteries were unveiled, and from whom the lights burst forth, and in whom the deepest realities ascended, and the one through whom the knowledge of Adam descended, leaving all creation unable to comprehend him, and before him every intellect was diminished, so that none of us, whether earlier or later, has comprehended him. The gardens of the celestial dominion (malakut) flourish with the blossoms of his beauty, and the reservoirs of the realm of omnipotence (jabarut) overflow through the outpouring of his lights, and there is nothing except that it is bound to him, for were it not for the intermediary, that which is connected would vanish, as it has been said. Send upon him a prayer befitting Your majesty, from You unto him, as is worthy of his exalted station. O Allah, indeed he is Your all-encompassing secret, the one who guides unto You, and Your supreme veil, standing before You in Your presence. O Allah, unite me to his lineage, and realise me through his rank, and grant me knowledge of him, a knowledge through which I may be delivered from the springs of ignorance, and drink from the fountains of divine grace, and carry me along his path into Your divine presence, borne and surrounded by Your support, and cast me against falsehood that I may crush it, and immerse me in the oceans of absolute oneness, and draw me forth from the mires of tawhid, and drown me in the very heart of the ocean of unity, until I neither see, nor hear, nor perceive, nor sense anything except through it, and make the supreme veil the life of my spirit, and make his spirit the secret of my reality, and make his reality the unifier of all my worlds through the realisation of the first truth. O First! O Last! O Manifest! O Hidden! Hear my supplication just as You heard the supplication of Your slave Zakariyya, and grant me victory through You and for You, and strengthen me through You and for You, and unite me with You, and place a barrier between me and everything besides You.
Allah, Allah, Allah!
“Indeed, He Who has made the Qur’an obligatory upon you will surely return you to a place of return.” (28:85)
“Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself and direct us to what is right in our affair.” (18:10)
“Indeed, Allah and His Angels send prayers upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send prayers upon him and greet him with peace.” (33:56)
About Salat al-Mashishiyya
The distinguished Hanafi jurist Sayyid Muhammad Amin Ibn Abidin, the celebrated author of the commentary on al-Durr al-Mukhtar, included this prayer among his authorised transmissions (thabat), describing its author in the following words:
I have also received the prayer of the Shaykh and Imam, the Pole and knower of Allah, the guide to Him, the possessor of a radiant spiritual path and lofty spiritual states, the noble descendant of the Prophetic Household, our master and liege lord, Abd al-Salam Ibn Bashish, pronounced with either a ba’ or a mim, al-Husayni al-Maghribi (d. 622 AH).
The prayer was also transmitted by the scholars al-Shihab Ahmad al-Nakhli and his student al-Shihab al-Manini, both of whom recorded it in their works of transmission. Al-Nakhli relates that he received it from Shaykh Ahmad al-Babuli and Shaykh Isa al-Tha’alabi, adding:
He instructed me to recite it once after the Dawn Prayer and once after the Sunset Prayer.
He further mentions that some annotated manuscripts recommend reciting it three times each day:
I also found in certain annotated copies of the prayer that it should be recited after the Fajr Prayer, after the Maghrib Prayer, and after the Isha Prayer.
Regarding its spiritual merits, al-Nakhli writes:
The lights and secrets contained within this prayer are beyond measure, and only Allah truly knows their reality. Through its recitation come divine aid and the lordly spiritual opening (al-fath al-rabbani). Whoever makes it a regular practice will remain steadfast in truthfulness and sincerity. His heart will be expanded, his affairs made easy, and he will be safeguarded by Allah from hardships, trials, and illnesses, both inwardly and outwardly. He will be granted victory over his enemies, receive immense divine assistance in all of his affairs, and be enveloped in the special care and concern of Allah, the Most Generous, the Bestower, as well as that of His Messenger ﷺ.
He concludes by reminding the reader that the fruits of this prayer are attained through sincere, consistent recitation accompanied by mindfulness of Allah:
The benefits of this prayer become manifest when it is recited regularly with truthfulness, sincerity, and God-consciousness.
