Qasida Mudariyya (Arabic: القصيدة المضرية; “The Mudariyya Ode”) is a celebrated poem composed by Imam al-Busiri, the renowned Egyptian poet and author of Qasida Burda. In this poem, Imam al-Busiri asks Allah to send abundant prayers and peace upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his Family, his Companions, the Prophets and Messengers, and all Muslims. The poem concludes with supplications for forgiveness, mercy, relief from hardship, and a blessed ending. It consists of 44 couplets.

يَا رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى الْمُخْتَارِ مِنْ مُضَرٍ ❁
وَالْأَنْبِيَا وَجَمِيعِ الرُّسْلِ مَا ذُكِرُوا ❁

Yā Rabbi ṣalli ʿalā l-mukhtāri min Muḍarin,
wa-l-anbiyā wa-jamīʿi r-rusli mā dhukirū.

1. O my Lord, send prayers upon the Chosen One from Mudar,
and upon the Prophets and all the Messengers whenever they are mentioned.

Wa-ṣalli Rabbi ʿalā l-hādī wa-shīʿatihi,

2. And send prayers, O my Lord, upon the guide, his followers,
and his Companions, who spread the teachings of the religion.

وَجَاهَدُوا مَعَهُ فِي اللَّهِ وَاجْتَهَدُوا ❁
وَهَاجَرُوا وَلَهُ آوَوْا وَقَدْ نَصَرُوا ❁

Wa-jāhadū maʿahu fī Llāhi wa-jtahadū,

3. Who strove alongside him for Allah and exerted themselves,
who emigrated, gave him refuge, and came to his aid.

وَبَيَّنُوا الْفَرْضَ وَالْمَسْنُونَ وَاعْتَصَبُوا ❁
لِلَّهِ وَاعْتَصَمُوا بِاللَّهِ فَانْتَصَرُوا ❁

4. Who made clear what is obligatory and what is prescribed by the Sunnah, and united
for Allah, held fast to Allah, and so gained victory.

أَزْكَى صَلَاةٍ وَأَنْمَاهَا وَأَشْرَفَهَا ❁
يُعَطِّرُ الْكَوْنَ رَيَّا نَشْرِهَا الْعَطِرُ ❁

Azkā ṣalātin wa-anmāhā wa-ashrafahā,

5. The purest, most abundant, and most exalted of prayers,
whose fragrant scent fills the whole universe.

مَعْبُوقَةً بِعَبِيقِ الْمِسْكِ زَاكِيَةً ❁
مِنْ طِيبِهَا أَرَجُ الرِّضْوَانِ يَنْتَشِرُ ❁

Maʿbūqatan bi-ʿabīqi l-miski zākiyatan,
min ṭībihā araju r-riḍwāni yantashiru.

6. Perfumed with the rich fragrance of musk, pure and delightful,
from whose fragrance the perfume of Allah’s good pleasure spreads.

عَدَّ الْحَصَى وَالثَّرَى وَالرَّمْلِ يَتْبَعُهَا ❁

7. As numerous as the pebbles, the moist earth, and every grain of sand,
and as the stars of the heavens, the plants of the earth, and every clod of clay.

وَعَدَّ وَزْنِ مَثَاقِيلِ الْجِبَالِ كَمَا ❁

Wa-ʿadda wazni mathāqīli l-jibāli kamā,

8. As great as the measure of the mountains’ weight,
and the drops of all water and rain.

9. As numerous as every leaf borne upon the trees,
and every letter that is recited and committed to writing.

10. As the wild beasts, the birds, the fish, and the grazing animals,
and beyond them the jinn, the Angels, and mankind.

وَالذَّرُّ وَالنَّمْلُ مَعْ جَمْعِ الْحُبُوبِ كَذَا ❁

Wa-dh-dharru wa-n-namlu maʿ jamʿi l-ḥubūbi kadhā,

11. As the tiny creatures, the ants, and every gathered grain,
and every hair, every fleece, every feather, and every strand of fur.

وَمَا أَحَاطَ بِهِ الْعِلْمُ الْمُحِيطُ وَمَا ❁
جَرَى بِهِ الْقَلَمُ الْمَأْمُورُ وَالْقَدَرُ ❁

Wa-mā aḥāṭa bihi l-ʿilmu l-muḥīṭu wa-mā,

12. As all that is encompassed by Allah’s all-embracing knowledge,
and all that has been written by the commanded Pen and decreed by destiny.

وَعَدَّ نَعْمَائِكَ اللَّاتِي مَنَنْتَ بِهَا ❁

Wa-ʿadda naʿmā'ika llātī mananta bihā,

13. As numerous as the favours You have bestowed upon creation,
since they came into being and since they were gathered together.

وَعَدَّ مِقْدَارِهِ السَّامِي الَّذِي شَرُفَتْ ❁
بِهِ النَّبِيُّونَ وَالْأَمْلَاكُ وَافْتَخَرُوا ❁

Wa-ʿadda miqdārihi s-sāmī lladhī sharufat,
bihi n-nabiyyūna wa-l-amlāku wa-ftakharū.

14. As great as his exalted rank,
through which the Prophets and the Angels were honoured and took pride.

وَعَدَّ مَا كَانَ فِي الْأَكْوَانِ يَا سَنَدِي ❁
وَمَا يَكُونُ إِلَى أَنْ تُبْعَثَ الصُّوَرُ ❁

Wa-ʿadda mā kāna fī l-akwāni yā sanadī,
wa-mā yakūnu ilā an tubʿatha ṣ-ṣuwaru.

15. As countless as all that has existed throughout creation, O my support,
and all that shall exist until the forms are resurrected.

فِي كُلِّ طَرْفَةِ عَيْنٍ يَطْرِفُونَ بِهَا ❁
أَهْلُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِينَ أَوْ يَذَرُوا ❁

Fī kulli ṭarfati ʿaynin yaṭrifūna bihā,

16. With every blink of an eye made by the inhabitants of the heavens and the earths,
or every moment in which they refrain from blinking.

مِلْءَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِينَ مَعْ جَبَلٍ ❁
وَالْفَرْشِ وَالْعَرْشِ وَالْكُرْسِيِّ وَمَا حَصَرُوا ❁

Mil'a s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍīna maʿ jabalin,

17. Enough to fill the heavens and the earths, together with the mountains,
the spread-out earth, the Throne, the Footstool, and all they contain.

مَا أَعْدَمَ اللَّهُ مَوْجُودًا وَأَوْجَدَ مَعْـ
ـدُومًا صَلَاةً دَوَامًا لَيْسَ تَنْحَصِرُ ❁

Mā aʿdama Llāhu mawjūdan wa-awjada maʿ-

18. As countless as every being Allah has caused to pass away,
and every non-existent thing He has brought into existence, prayers without end.

تَسْتَغْرِقُ الْعَدَّ مَعْ جَمْعِ الدُّهُورِ كَمَا ❁
تُحِيطُ بِالْحَدِّ لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ ❁

Tastaghriqu l-ʿadda maʿ jamʿi d-duhūri kamā,
tuḥīṭu bi-l-ḥaddi lā tubqī wa-lā tadharu.

19. Prayers that surpass every reckoning throughout all ages,
embracing every limit, leaving nothing behind.

لَا غَايَةً وَانْتِهَاءً يَا عَظِيمُ لَهَا ❁
وَلَا لَهَا أَمَدٌ يُقْضَى فَيُعْتَبَرُ ❁

Lā ghāyatan wa-ntihā'an yā ʿAẓīmu lahā,
wa-lā lahā amadun yuqḍā fa-yuʿtabaru.

20. They have neither end nor limit, O Magnificent,
nor any appointed term that can expire and be reckoned.

وَعَدَّ أَضْعَافِ مَا قَدْ مَرَّ مِنْ عَدَدٍ ❁
مَعْ ضِعْفِ أَضْعَافِهِ يَا مَنْ لَهُ الْقَدَرُ ❁

Wa-ʿadda aḍʿāfi mā qad marra min ʿadadin,
maʿ ḍiʿfi aḍʿāfihi yā man lahu l-qadaru.

21. Multiplied by the numbers already mentioned,
and by multiples of those multiples, O You to Whom belongs the decree.

كَمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضَى سَيِّدِي وَكَمَا ❁

22. As You love and are pleased with, my Master, and as
You have commanded us to send prayers, for You are Powerful.

23. Together with peace, in the number already mentioned.

وَكُلُّ ذَلِكَ مَضْرُوبٌ بِحَقِّكَ فِي ❁
أَنْفَاسِ خَلْقِكَ إِنْ قَلُّوا وَإِنْ كَثُرُوا ❁

Wa-kullu dhālika maḍrūbun bi-ḥaqqika fī,

24. And let all of that be multiplied, by Your truth,
with every breath taken by Your creation, whether few or many.

يَا رَبِّ وَاغْفِرْ لِقَارِيهَا وَسَامِعِهَا ❁
وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ جَمِيعًا أَيْنَمَا حَضَرُوا ❁
وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ جَمِيعًا أَيْنَمَا حَضَرُوا ❁
Yā Rabbi wa-ghfir li-qārīhā wa-sāmiʿihā,
wa-l-muslimīna jamīʿan aynamā ḥaḍarū.

25. O my Lord, forgive the one who recites it and the one who listens to it,
and all the Muslims, wherever they may be.

وَوَالِدِينَا وَأَهْلِينَا وَجِيرَتِنَا ❁
وَكُلُّنَا سَيِّدِي لِلْعَفْوِ مُفْتَقِرُ ❁

Wa-wālidīnā wa-ahlīnā wa-jīratinā,
wa-kullunā sayyidī li-l-ʿafwi muftaqiru.

26. And our parents, our families, and our neighbours,
for all of us, my Master, stand in need of Your forgiveness.

وَقَدْ أَتَيْتُ ذُنُوبًا لَا عِدَادَ لَهَا ❁
لَكِنَّ عَفْوَكَ لَا يُبْقِي وَلَا يَذَرُ ❁

Wa-qad ataytu dhunūban lā ʿidāda lahā,
lākinna ʿafwaka lā yubqī wa-lā yadharu.

27. I have committed sins beyond all reckoning,
yet Your pardon leaves none of them behind.

وَالْهَمُّ عَنْ كُلِّ مَا أَبْغِيهِ أَشْغَلَنِي ❁
وَقَدْ أَتَى خَاضِعًا وَالْقَلْبُ مُنْكَسِرُ ❁

Wa-l-hammu ʿan kulli mā abghīhi ashghalanī,
wa-qad atā khāḍiʿan wa-l-qalbu munkasiru.

28. My worries have consumed me and distracted me from all that I seek,
yet I have come before You in humility, with a broken heart.

أَرْجُوكَ يَا رَبِّ فِي الدَّارَيْنِ تَرْحَمُنَا ❁
بِجَاهِ مَنْ فِي يَدَيْهِ سَبَّحَ الْحَجَرُ ❁
بِجَاهِ مَنْ فِي يَدَيْهِ سَبَّحَ الْحَجَرُ ❁
Arjūka yā Rabbi fī d-dārayni tarḥamunā,
bi-jāhi man fī yadayhi sabbaḥa l-ḥajaru.

29. I implore You, O my Lord, to have mercy upon us in this world and the Hereafter,
through the honour of the one in whose hands the stones glorified You.

يَا رَبِّ أَعْظِمْ لَنَا أَجْرًا وَمَغْفِرَةً ❁
فَإِنَّ جُودَكَ بَحْرٌ لَيْسَ يَنْحَصِرُ ❁

Yā Rabbi aʿẓim lanā ajran wa-maghfiratan,
fa-inna jūdaka baḥrun laysa yanḥaṣiru.

30. O my Lord, grant us an immense reward and abundant forgiveness,
for Your generosity is an ocean without shore or end.

وَاقْضِ دُيُونًا لَهَا الْأَخْلَاقُ ضَائِقَةٌ ❁
وَفَرِّجِ الْكَرْبَ عَنَّا أَنْتَ مُقْتَدِرُ ❁

Wa-qḍi duyūnan lahā l-akhlāqu ḍā'iqatun,
wa-farriji l-karba ʿannā anta Muqtadiru.

31. Settle the debts that put our character under strain,
and remove our distress, for You are Powerful.

32. Show us Your gentle care in every trial,
with a beautiful kindness by which every hardship is lifted.

بِالْمُصْطَفَى الْمُجْتَبَى خَيْرِ الْأَنَامِ وَمَنْ ❁
جَلَالَةً نَزَلَتْ فِي مَدْحِهِ السُّوَرُ ❁

Bi-l-Muṣṭafā l-mujtabā khayri l-anāmi wa-man,

33. Through the Chosen One, the Elect, the best of all creation,
in whose praise the surahs were revealed to honour him.

ثُمَّ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى الْمُخْتَارِ مَا طَلَعَتْ ❁
شَمْسُ النَّهَارِ وَمَا قَدْ شَعْشَعَ الْقَمَرُ ❁

37. And bestow Your grace upon Uthman, the Possessor of the Two Lights,

About Qasida Mudariyya
Numerous scholars and righteous people have spoken of the virtues of regularly reciting Qasida Mudariyya. Among the blessings associated with the poem is seeing the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in a dream.
Habib Zayn ibn Ibrahim said:
Whoever recites Qasida Mudariyya regularly will see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream.
Others have likewise related that, through regular recitation of the poem, they were blessed with a vision of the Prophet ﷺ in their dreams.
Habib Umar ibn Ahmad ibn Sumayt narrated that his noble father said:
Whoever regularly recites the Mudariyya and the Burda will see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream.
Ibrahim al-Dasuqi also recommended the regular recitation of Qasida Mudariyya on Thursday nights as a means of seeing the Prophet ﷺ in a dream. He advised that, after completing the poem, one should continue reciting the following verse from Qasida Burda until falling asleep:
نَعَمْ سَرَى طَيْفُ مَنْ أَهْوَى فَأَرَّقَنِي ❁
وَالْحُبُّ يَعْتَرِضُ اللَّذَّاتِ بِالْأَلَمِ ❁
وَالْحُبُّ يَعْتَرِضُ اللَّذَّاتِ بِالْأَلَمِ ❁
Naʿam sarā ṭayfu man ahwā fa-arraqanī,
wa-l-ḥubbu yaʿtariḍu l-ladhdhati bi-l-alami.
wa-l-ḥubbu yaʿtariḍu l-ladhdhati bi-l-alami.
Yes, a vision of the one I love came to me by night and kept me awake,

Another account relates that a group of travellers were journeying to visit Shaykh Nurayn Ahmad Sabir while reciting Qasida Mudariyya. When they reached the following verse:
ثُمَّ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى الْمُخْتَارِ مَا طَلَعَتْ ❁
شَمْسُ النَّهَارِ وَمَا قَدْ شَعْشَعَ الْقَمَرُ ❁
شَمْسُ النَّهَارِ وَمَا قَدْ شَعْشَعَ الْقَمَرُ ❁
Thumma ṣ-ṣalatu ʿalā l-mukhtāri mā ṭalaʿat,
shamsu n-nahāri wa-mā qad shaʿshaʿa l-qamaru.

Then send prayers upon the Chosen One for as long as the sun rises by day,

They witnessed lights extending from the east to the west. The brilliance was so overwhelming that they were unable to continue walking, so they stopped until it subsided before resuming their journey.
