Hizbul Bahr
Hizbul Bahr (Arabic: حزب البحر; “The Litany of the Sea”) is a renowned litany of Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili. The great Imam, on his way to perform the pilgrimage, was taught the litany by the Prophet ﷺ in a dream after his voyage had been delayed by poor winds. It is widely recited for protection from harm, relief from difficulties, and other purposes according to one’s intention and spiritual aspiration.

About Hizbul Bahr
Hizbul Bahr consists largely of Qur’anic verses and Prophetic supplications found in authentic collections of hadith. Its widespread recitation throughout the Muslim world over many centuries reflects the considerable acceptance it has enjoyed within the Ummah.
Origin of Hizbul Bahr
The origin of Hizbul Bahr is related through early accounts transmitted from the companions and family of Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili. Among those who reported its story were Shaykh Abu al-Azaʾim Madi ibn Sultan, who related it in Tunis, and Shaykh Sharaf al-Din, the son of Imam al-Shadhili, who transmitted it in Damanhur al-Wahsh, a town in Egypt’s Nile Delta, in 715 AH (1315–1316 CE). They said:
The Shaykh [Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili] resolved to leave Cairo for the pilgrimage, not long after the main group of pilgrims had departed. He said, ‘I have been commanded to perform the pilgrimage this year, so find me a vessel on the Nile that will carry me through Upper Egypt.’ We searched for a vessel but found only one belonging to Christians, with an elderly Christian man and his sons aboard. The Shaykh said, ‘We shall board it.’
We boarded the vessel and departed from Cairo. After two or three days, the wind turned against us and we were forced to stop at an uninhabited place along the Nile. We remained there for nearly a week, with the hills of Cairo still visible to us. One of the pilgrims travelling with us then said, ‘How could the Shaykh say that he was commanded to perform the pilgrimage this year when it is already so late? When will this journey come to an end?’
At midday, the Shaykh fell asleep. Upon waking, he recited this Litany and summoned the ship’s captain, asking him his name. When the man answered that he was called Mismar, the Shaykh instructed him, ‘O blessed Mismar, raise the sails.’ Surprised, the captain asked, ‘Are we going back to Cairo, sir?’ The Shaykh answered, ‘We are continuing on our way, Allah willing.’ Mismar replied, ‘With the wind as it is, we will be back in Cairo before nightfall. Besides, it is far too strong for us to sail.’ Nevertheless, the Shaykh told him, ‘Raise the sails with the blessing of Allah.’
We raised the sails as instructed, and by Allah’s command the wind turned in our favour. It caught the sails with such force and suddenness that the crew could not release the mooring rope in time and had no choice but to cut it. With the wind now carrying us onwards, we resumed our journey. Witnessing what had occurred, the captain and his brother announced their acceptance of Islam. Their father wept and cried, ‘I have lost my sons on this voyage!’ The Shaykh reassured him, saying, ‘No, you have gained them.’
That night, the elderly Christian man had a dream in which he witnessed the Day of Resurrection. In his dream, he saw Paradise and Hell, and he saw the Shaykh leading a vast multitude into Paradise, with his own sons among them. When he tried to join them, he was prevented, and a voice told him, ‘You cannot be among them until you embrace their religion.’ Upon waking, he related his dream to the Shaykh and accepted Islam. The Shaykh then told him, ‘Those whom you saw with me are my followers until the Day of Resurrection.’
We continued our journey, and Allah facilitated our passage through numerous remarkable events, the full account of which would take too long to relate. In the end, all of us reached the pilgrimage and performed it that same year.
Sidi Madi, may Allah have mercy on him, further related that the elderly man went on to become a great Friend of Allah. He sold his vessel, joined us and his sons in performing the pilgrimage, and later established a zawiya in Upper Egypt. Many miracles were manifested through him, of which the events of this very journey were among them. May Allah have mercy upon him and be well pleased with him.
The Shaykh said, ‘By Allah, I received this Litany from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself, who dictated its words to me. He instructed me, “Preserve it carefully, for it contains the Supreme Name of Allah.” Wherever this Litany is recited, safety and protection are found. Had the people of Baghdad known and recited it, the Tartars would not have conquered the city.’
Recitation of Hizbul Bahr
Ibn Ayyad relates the following concerning the recitation of Hizbul Bahr in al-Mafakhir al-Aliyya fi Ma’athir al-Shadhiliyya:
Shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Bistami said regarding Hizbul Bahr, ‘It has spread throughout the lands and become well known and highly esteemed, being recited in numerous mosques and proclaimed in all manner of places.’
The scholars have stated that Hizbul Bahr contains the Supreme Name of Allah and the Great Universal Secret. It is even related that Shaykh Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili himself said, ‘Had my Litany been invoked in Baghdad, it would not have been conquered.’
Hizbul Bahr has been described as an abundant provision and an impenetrable shield, through which hardships and afflictions may be relieved by subtle means of the unseen. Wherever it is recited is said to be safeguarded from afflictions and protected against calamities. For those at the beginning of the spiritual path, it is said to contain healing secrets, while those who have reached its higher stages may receive dazzling spiritual illuminations.
It is related that whoever recites Hizbul Bahr each day after sunrise will have his call heard by Allah, his distress relieved, and his rank among people elevated. Allah will expand his heart with knowledge of the Divine Oneness, facilitate his affairs, ease his difficulties, protect him from the evil of humans and jinn, and safeguard him from the misfortunes of both night and day. Whoever looks upon him will feel love towards him, and if he recites the Litany in the presence of a tyrant, he will be protected from his evil.
Whoever recites Hizbul Bahr after every prayer is said to be enriched by Allah so that he is not dependent upon His creation, protected from the changing fortunes of time, and guided towards happiness in every movement and moment of rest. Whoever recites it during the first hour of Friday, Allah will place love for him in the hearts of the people.
One scholar stated that if Hizbul Bahr is written upon something, that object will be protected through the power and might of Allah. Whoever remains constant in its recitation is said to be protected from dying by choking, drowning, burning, or being struck by lightning. If the wind fails those travelling aboard a ship and they recite it, a favourable wind will come to them by Allah’s permission. If it is written upon the wall of a city or house, Allah will protect that city or house from sudden misfortunes and afflictions.
Hizbul Bahr is also said to possess powerful benefits in times of war and has been described as a prayer for Divine aid and victory against all enemies, whether from among humans or jinn. These are only some of the benefits that have been related concerning it. May Allah bless the one who said:
Invoke the Litany of the Sea, and wonders you shall see,
It will bring ease to your affairs and grant you strength.
You will find the sea obedient and the wind subdued,
Gentleness will swiftly come, and your time will be filled with joy.
Hizbul Bahr may be recited individually or collectively, either for general benefit or for a particular need. Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller writes in Sea Without Shore: A Manual of the Sufi Path:
Hizb al-Bahr or ‘The Litany of the Sea’ is recited after the mid-afternoon prayer (‘Asr). Some read it at sunrise, at which time it possesses particular properties, and it is also read whenever one is in particular need of something, in which case one makes one’s intention at the words wa sakhkhir lana hadha l-bahr (“and subject to us this sea”). Like all of the hizbs of the tariqa, it should be memorised and recited from one’s heart as if it were one’s own words, with complete attention to whom one is addressing it. It is not a magic wand, but an expression of slavehood and poverty. In a general way, the purpose of these wirds is not only to train the heart in du’a but to eventually eliminate one’s absentmindedness from Allah, and one must strive in them to have presence of heart. Though memorised, they are not rote.
Sidi Ahmad Zarruq wrote the following about Hizbul Bahr in his commentary:
The manner in which Hizbul Bahr is used varies according to one’s intention and spiritual aspiration. It may be recited for seeking benefit or protection from harm, with the particular intention being made upon reaching the words, ‘and subject to us this sea.’ Ibn Abbad, may Allah have mercy on him, stated this, and the author mentions having seen it written in Ibn Abbad’s own hand and affirming its correctness.
Ibn Ata’Allah states in Lata’if al-Minan, ‘It is a wird to be recited after the ‘Asr prayer, while the Great Litany is for after the Fajr prayer.’ I would add that the Munajat, the concluding prayers of Ibn Ata’Allah’s Hikam, should be recited during the final part of the night before dawn.
Each of these practices has its own spiritual secret, which one who remains consistent in them may discover before long, provided he adheres to piety and righteousness without taking on more than he can bear. And Allah knows best.
