Dua 1: Supplication for Abundant and Beneficial Rain

When seeking rain, it is recommended to make abundant dua, remember Allah, seek forgiveness and approach Him with humility and submission. Among the supplications mentioned for seeking rain is:

اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا ❁ هَنِيئًا مَرِيئًا ❁ غَدَقًا مُجَلِّلًا ❁ سَحًّا عَامًّا ❁ طَبَقًا دَائِمًا ❁ اللَّهُمَّ عَلَى الظِّرَابِ وَمَنَابِتِ الشَّجَرِ وَبُطُونِ الْأَوْدِيَةِ ❁ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْتَغْفِرُكَ ❁ إِنَّكَ كُنْتَ غَفَّارًا ❁ فَأَرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْنَا مِدْرَارًا ❁ اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا الْغَيْثَ وَلَا تَجْعَلْنَا مِنَ الْقَانِطِينَ ❁ اللَّهُمَّ أَنْبِتْ لَنَا الزَّرْعَ وَأَدِرَّ لَنَا الضَّرْعَ ❁ وَاسْقِنَا مِنْ بَرَكَاتِ السَّمَاءِ ❁ وَأَنْبِتْ لَنَا مِنْ بَرَكَاتِ الْأَرْضِ ❁ اللَّهُمَّ ارْفَعْ عَنَّا الْجَهْدَ وَالْجُوعَ وَالْعُرْيَ ❁ وَاكْشِفْ عَنَّا مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ مَا لَا يَكْشِفُهُ غَيْرُكَ ❁
Allāhumma sqinā ghaythan mughīthan, hanī'an marī'an, ghadaqan mujallilan, saḥḥan ʿāmman, ṭabaqan dā'imā. Allāhumma ʿalā ẓ-ẓirābi wa-manābiti sh-shajari wa-buṭūni l-awdiyah. Allāhumma innā nastaghfiruka innaka kunta Ghaffāran, fa-arsili s-samā'a ʿalaynā midrārā. Allāhumma sqinā l-ghaytha wa-lā tajʿalnā mina l-qāniṭīn. Allāhumma anbit lanā z-zarʿa wa-adirra lanā ḍ-ḍarʿa, wa-sqinā min barakāti s-samā'i, wa-anbit lanā min barakāti l-arḍ. Allāhumma rfaʿ ʿannā l-jahda wa-l-jūʿa wa-l-ʿurya, wa-kshif ʿannā mina l-balā'i mā lā yakshifuhu ghayruk.
O Allah, grant us rain that brings relief, wholesome and nourishing, abundant and widespread, pouring heavily over the land and lasting. O Allah, send it upon the hills, the places where trees grow and the valleys. O Allah, we seek Your forgiveness. Indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, so send down abundant rain upon us. O Allah, grant us rain and do not make us among those who despair. O Allah, cause our crops to grow and our livestock to give milk. Give us to drink from the blessings of the sky and bring forth for us the blessings of the earth. O Allah, remove from us hardship, hunger and nakedness, and remove from us affliction which none but You can remove.

Dua 2: Seeking Rain Through al-Abbas

During a drought, Umar ibn al-Khattab I sought rain through the intercession of al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib I and said:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَتَوَسَّلُ إِلَيْكَ بِنَبِيِّنَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَتَسْقِينَا ❁ وَإِنَّا نَتَوَسَّلُ إِلَيْكَ بِعَمِّ نَبِيِّنَا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاسْقِنَا ❁
Allāhumma innā kunnā natawassalu ilayka bi-nabiyyinā ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama fa-tasqīnā, wa-innā natawassalu ilayka bi-ʿammi nabiyyinā ṣallā Llāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama fa-sqinā.
O Allah, we used to seek a means of approach to You through our Prophet ﷺ, and You would grant us rain. We now seek a means of approach to You through the uncle of our Prophet ﷺ, so grant us rain.

Dua 3: Asking for Beneficial Rain

Jabir ibn Abdullah I related that some women came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ crying because of the lack of rain. He then supplicated:

اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا ❁ مَرِيئًا مَرِيعًا ❁ نَافِعًا غَيْرَ ضَارٍّ ❁ عَاجِلًا غَيْرَ آجِلٍ ❁
Allāhumma sqinā ghaythan mughīthan, marī'an marīʿan, nāfiʿan ghayra ḍārrin, ʿājilan ghayra ājil.
O Allah, grant us rain that brings relief, wholesome and fruitful, beneficial and not harmful, coming soon and not delayed.

Dua 4: Asking Allah to Revive the Land

Amr ibn Shuayb I reported from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say when seeking rain:

اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِ عِبَادَكَ وَبَهَائِمَكَ ❁ وَانْشُرْ رَحْمَتَكَ ❁ وَأَحْيِ بَلَدَكَ الْمَيِّتَ ❁
Allāhumma sqi ʿibādaka wa-bahā'imaka, wa-nshur raḥmataka, wa-aḥyi baladaka l-mayyit.
O Allah, give Your slaves and Your animals water to drink, spread Your mercy, and bring Your dead land back to life.

Dua 5: Supplication of the Prophet ﷺ for Rain

A’ishah J reported that when the people complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the lack of rain, he arranged for a minbar to be placed at the prayer ground and appointed a day for the people to gather. He came out in the morning, praised Allah and told the people that Allah had commanded them to supplicate to Him and had promised to answer them. He then recited the following supplication.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ❁ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ ❁ مَلِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ❁ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَفْعَلُ مَا يُرِيدُ ❁ اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْغَنِيُّ وَنَحْنُ الْفُقَرَاءُ ❁ أَنْزِلْ عَلَيْنَا الْغَيْثَ ❁ وَاجْعَلْ مَا أَنْزَلْتَ لَنَا قُوَّةً وَبَلَاغًا إِلَى حِينٍ ❁
Al-ḥamdu li-Llāhi Rabbi l-ʿālamīna r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīmi, Maliki yawmi d-dīni, lā ilāha illā Llāhu yafʿalu mā yurīd. Allāhumma anta Llāhu lā ilāha illā anta, al-Ghaniyyu wa-naḥnu l-fuqarā', anzil ʿalaynā l-ghaytha, wa-jʿal mā anzalta lanā quwwatan wa-balāghan ilā ḥīn.
All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful, King of the Day of Judgement. There is no god but Allah. He does whatever He wills. O Allah, You are Allah. There is no god but You. You are the Self-Sufficient, and we are the poor. Send down rain upon us, and make what You send down a source of strength and provision for us for a time.

Dua 6: Praising Allah After the Rain Came

After the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had supplicated for rain, Allah caused clouds to gather, followed by thunder, lightning and rain. When he saw the people hurrying for shelter, he smiled until his molar teeth became visible and said:

أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ❁ وَأَنِّي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولُهُ ❁
Ashhadu anna Llāha ʿalā kulli shay'in Qadīrun, wa-annī ʿabdu Llāhi wa-rasūluh.
I bear witness that Allah has power over all things, and that I am the slave and Messenger of Allah.

Dua 7: Asking for Beneficial Rain

A’ishah J reported that when rain fell, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would recite the following supplication.

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا هَنِيئًا ❁
Allāhumma ṣayyiban hanī'ā.
O Allah, make it a wholesome and beneficial downpour.

Dua 8: Seeking Protection When Clouds Gather

A’ishah J reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw clouds forming on the horizon, he would leave what he was doing, even if he was in prayer, and recite the following supplication.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا ❁
Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min sharrihā.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from its evil.

Dua 9: Supplication Recommended by Imam al-Shafi'i

Imam al-Shafi’i recommended making abundant dua when seeking rain and mentioned the following supplication:

اللَّهُمَّ أَمَرْتَنَا بِدُعَائِكَ ❁ وَوَعَدْتَنَا إِجَابَتَكَ ❁ وَقَدْ دَعَوْنَاكَ كَمَا أَمَرْتَنَا ❁ فَأَجِبْنَا كَمَا وَعَدْتَنَا ❁ اللَّهُمَّ امْنُنْ عَلَيْنَا بِمَغْفِرَةِ مَا قَارَفْنَا ❁ وَإِجَابَتِكَ فِي سُقْيَانَا وَسَعَةِ رِزْقِنَا ❁
Allāhumma amartanā bi-duʿā'ika, wa-waʿadtanā ijābataka, wa-qad daʿawnāka kamā amartanā, fa-ajibnā kamā waʿadtanā. Allāhumma mnun ʿalaynā bi-maghfirati mā qārafnā, wa-ijābatika fī suqyānā wa-saʿati rizqinā.
O Allah, You have commanded us to supplicate to You and promised us Your response. We have called upon You as You commanded us, so answer us as You have promised. O Allah, favour us with Your forgiveness for what we have committed, answer our prayer for rain, and grant us abundant provision.
