Dua 5: Prayer and Supplication Before Travel
It is mustahabb for a person intending to leave home for a journey to perform two rak’ahs of prayer before departing. Al-Mut’im ibn al-Miqdam I reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “No one leaves anything better with his family than two rak’ahs which he performs among them when intending to travel.”
What to Recite in These Two Rak’ahs
Some scholars have recommended that after reciting al-Fatihah, one should recite Surah al-Kafirun in the first rak’ah and Surah al-Ikhlas in the second.
Others have held that it is preferable to recite Surah al-Falaq in the first rak’ah and Surah an-Nas in the second, after al-Fatihah.
After completing the prayer and saying the salam, it is recommended to recite Ayat al-Kursi. It has been reported that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi before leaving his home will not encounter anything harmful until he returns.
It is also recommended to recite Surah Quraysh. This chapter is known among scholars and people of spiritual insight as a means of protection and security.
The eminent Shafi’i jurist Abu al-Hasan al-Qazwini, who was known for his piety, spiritual insight, and righteous states, stated that reciting this surah brings protection from all forms of harm.
Abu Tahir ibn Jahshawi related:
I was about to travel and felt afraid, so I went to al-Qazwini and asked him to make du’a for me. He said: ‘Whoever intends to travel and fears an enemy or a wild beast should recite Li-īlāfi Quraysh, for it is protection from all evil.’ I recited it, and no harm has befallen me since.
Once the recitation is complete, one should make du’a with humility and presence of heart. It is recommended to say the following supplication:
