    Dua for Breaking Fast

    Contents

      There are number of Duas which may be recited at the time of breaking / opening the fast. Traditionally, the fast is broken with a date or water if dates are unavailable.

      Dua for Breaking Fast 1

      It is related from the Sunans of Abu Dawud and an-Nasa’i from Ibn Umar I who related that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ broke his fast he said:

      ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ، وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
      Dhahaba-ẓ-ẓama', wa-btallati-l-‘urūq, wa thabata-l-ajru in shā'a-llāh.
      Thirst is gone, veins have been moistened, and the reward has been secured, if Allah Most High wills.

      Dua for Breaking Fast 2

      And It is related from the Sunan of Abu Dawud from Mu’adh ibn Zahrah, who reported that he had been informed that when the Prophet ﷺ broke the fast he said:

      اَللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْتُ، وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ
      Allāhumma laka ṣumt, wa 'alā rizqika afṭart.
      Allah, for You have I fasted and with Your sustenance I break my fast.

      Dua for Breaking Fast 3

      It is related in the book of Ibn as-Sunni from Mu‘ādh ibn Zahrah who narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ broke the fast he said:

      اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَعَانَنِي فَصُمْتُ، وٍرَزَقَنِي فَأَفْطَرْتُ
      Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi-lladhī a‘ānanī fa-ṣumt, wa razaqanī fa-afṭart.
      Praise be to Allah, Who helped me to fast and has given me sustenance so that I could break my fast.

      Dua for Breaking Fast 4

      It is related in the book of Ibn as-Sunni from Ibn Abbas who related that when the Prophet broke his fast he said:

      اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ صُمْنَا وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْنَا فَتَقَبَّلْهُ مِنَّا، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ العَلِيمُ
      Allāhumma laka ṣumnā, wa 'alā rizqika afṭarnā fa taqabbal minnā, innaka Anta-s-Samī'u-l-'Alīm.
      Allah, for You we have fasted and with Your sustenance we break our fast, so accept it from us. You are the All-Hearing the All-Knowing.
      Reference Ibn as-Sunnl (481) and al-Futuhat (4/341)- Ibn Hajar states that this hadith is gharib and that its chain is seriously weak.

      Dua for Breaking Fast 5

      It is related in the books of Ibn Majah and Ibn as-Sunni from Abdullah ibn Abi Mulaykah, who reported that Abdullah ibn al-As narrated: “I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘When a fasting person breaks his fast, he has one dua that is not denied.” Ibn Abi Mulaykah reported that he heard Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As say, when he broke his fast:

      اَللّـهُمَّ اِنّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ الَّتي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْء أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي
      Allāhumma innī asaluka bi-raḥmatika-llati wasi'at kulla shay'in an taghfira lī.
      O Allah, I ask You by Your Mercy that encompasses everything to forgive me.

      Dua for breaking the fast with people

      It is related from the Sunan of Abu Dawud as well as others, with Sahih isnads from Anas, who related that the Messenger of Allah came to Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah. [The latter] brought some bread and oil, and he ate. Then the Prophet ﷺ said:

      أَفْطَرَ عِندكُمْ الصَّائمونَ، وأَكَلَ طَعَامَكُمْ الأَبْرَارُ، وَصَلَّتْ عَلَيْكُمُ المَلائِكَةُ
      Afṭara ‘indakum aṣ-ṣa'imūn, wa akala ṭa'āmakum al-abrār, wa ṣallat 'alaykum al-malā'ikah.
      May those who fast break their fast with you, may the pious eat your food, and may the angels pray for you.
