Dua al-Nasiri
Dua al-Nasiri (Arabic: دعاء الناصري; “The Prayer of the Oppressed”) was composed by Imam Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Nasir al-Dar’i (d. 1085 AH/1674 CE) in response to the immense trials faced by Muslims in his time. It became a powerful supplication recited by those enduring oppression and injustice and has been recited by generations of Moroccans. During the French occupation of Morocco, colonial authorities reportedly prohibited its recitation because of its spiritual influence and its ability to inspire and mobilise the people.

About Dua al-Nasiri
Dua al-Nasiri was composed by Imam Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Nasir al-Dar’i (1012–1085 AH/1603–1674 CE), one of the foremost Moroccan scholars and spiritual masters of his age. Born in Tamegroute in the Draa Valley of southern Morocco, he grew up in poverty but displayed an exceptional devotion to knowledge from an early age. When he could not afford books, he copied them by hand, building a personal library filled with his own transcriptions, corrections, and annotations. He later became a master of numerous Islamic sciences, including jurisprudence, Arabic, theology, Qur’anic commentary, hadith, and Sufism, and founded a zawiyah where he taught students and spiritually guided disciples.
Imam al-Dar’i lived during one of the most turbulent periods in Moroccan history. He was born in the same year that Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur al-Dhahabi died, after which Morocco entered a prolonged period of civil conflict lasting more than 70 years. At the same time, European naval power and colonial ambitions were rapidly expanding. Dua al-Nasiri emerged from this setting as Imam al-Darʿi’s personal response to the trials and oppression endured by Muslims in his time.
The prayer is remarkable for the simplicity and directness of its supplication. It asks Allah to overlook the transgressions that bring calamities, bestow mercy, restore justice, protect the weak, relieve the poor, preserve religious knowledge, safeguard the land, frustrate the plots of aggressors, and restore righteousness and security. Its appeal is not merely for the destruction of enemies, but for their harmful designs to be restrained and for justice and mercy to prevail.
The prayer went on to occupy an important place in Moroccan devotional life. It was widely recited during the French occupation of Morocco, and Shaykh Abd al-Hayy al-Imrawi of Fez reported that the French authorities became so concerned by its influence upon the people and their belief in its efficacy that they prohibited its recitation in mosques. Moroccans nevertheless continued to recite it, and some elderly Moroccans later attributed the eventual French withdrawal from Morocco in part to the blessings of the prayer.
Dua al-Nasiri was composed in the Arabic rajaz metre, a flowing and accessible poetic form traditionally associated with rhythmic recitation. Despite its apparent simplicity, its language is subtle and carefully constructed, combining poetic elegance with sincere and forceful supplication. Its enduring appeal lies in this balance of simplicity, spiritual depth, and its universal plea for mercy, justice, protection, and relief from oppression.
