About al-Kibrit al-Ahmar
Al-Kibrit al-Ahmar (“The Red Sulphur”) takes its name from the legendary substance of alchemy, which was believed to transform base metals into gold. In the language of Islamic spirituality, the title symbolises the purification and transformation of the human heart through remembrance of Allah and abundant prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ.
Attributed to Shaykh Muhyiddin Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, this collection brings together Qur’anic verses, prayers upon the Prophet ﷺ, supplications, and invocations. Its structure reflects the classical Sufi understanding that regular remembrance of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ serves as a means of spiritual refinement and nearness to Allah.
The litany concludes with prayers seeking relief from hardship, protection, forgiveness, and Allah’s Pleasure. For this reason, it has long been recited by scholars and spiritual masters as part of their daily awrad.
Within the Chishtiyyah tradition, al-Kibrit al-Ahmar is commonly recited each day, particularly after the Fajr prayer. Those who have received an ijazah from their Shaykh may also be given additional guidance regarding its recitation according to their individual spiritual circumstances.
